What are some stores that sell cute/fashionable clothes for spring and summer? Thanks!?
19.February, 2010
I have a couple questions:
~I need some help with finding cute clothes. I have a more laid back style, but I am willing to change that a little. What are some pieces of clothing that may make look good ( I am skinny, fairly tall, blonde, and have deep blue/gray eyes) but are not too uncomfortable? I like shopping at American Eagle and Aeropostale. I also like Hollister Co. and Abercrombie (and Fitch) but they are little to expensive. But I will take all suggestions! Delia’s is also nice, and I sometimes shop at Justice for basics because I fit into them (skinny jeans, shorts, ETC.) Old Navy is also among the list.
~ I have layered, shoulder length, blonde hair with natural highlights. I am not a big fan of wearing it down, on some occasions, however, I do. I like ponytails, a lot, and try to change it up whether it be side, back, a cute head band, some clips, a poof (which never looks good, any suggestions on that?) What are some other styles that are easy/look good, but doesn’t require me to always wear my hair down? Which leads me too…
~ What are some hair accessories and where can I get them? You can just attach a link. Thanks!
~What are some cute purses/bags? I have a chocolate brown gold Coach purse and a good bit of Vera Bradley!
~ What are some good color to go with me? I get a fair tan during summer, but I have a golden skin tone. Not tan, but not pale.
~Where can I get cute shows? I’m a major sneaker girl- I love Under Amour, Converse (I have 2 pairs), a pair of Nike shoes (they are the DC type, extremely unfunctional, just cute to wear). I like the Nike ones that are like DC, cute to wear, colorful, one color different shades, unfuctional, that type of thing. I know there ins’t a "nice" sneaker, but if there was one brand you really liked, which would it be and could you please tell me where to get them? If they can be by Nike- that’d be great!
~What are some cute accessories for spring/summer? Or in general?
~ MAJOR QUESTION! Can scarves be worn all year long? Like the light weight ones?
That’s all for now! Thanks to anyone brave enough to answer all this.
You should check out Beverly Lane. They have a lot of really cute looks that are always on trend. Plus the prices are really affordable and they offer Free Shipping on all US orders. (www.BeverlyLane.com)
What kinds of bags are good for a university student?
17.February, 2010
I am a university student who is looking for a new bag. For the past year I have been using a knapsack, but I am looking for something that won’t scream "geeky student" so loudly. At my campus most of the girls use fashionable bags and not knapsacks; however, I am not overly concerned about being fashionable and would prefer function over form (but I think it would be nice to have a bag that I can wear more fashionable outfits with.)
Also, I’m a commuter student who needs to bring a notebook, small laptop, lunch, pens, etc. every day, so I need the bag to be big enough to fit a lot of things. However I am quite petite (about 5′2 and 100 pounds) so I would like something that is not too bad on my back/shoulders.
Does anyone have any suggestions for good bags?
I would like it to have the following qualities:
- lots of storage space
- nice looking
- functional
- not too masculine looking
- preferably waterproof
If you could provide a link with your answer that would be awesome! Thanks for your help!
it would be better if you get a side bag there waterproof, the look ok, you have a bit of space.
you should try the-house.com they have load’s of bag’s there.

What do you think of this part of my story?
14.February, 2010
This is set in the middle of my story, so I am sorry if you do not understand it.
Abruptly, he was snapped out of his thoughts when a thump at his door commanded him to answer it. Sighing heavily, he stood up and wiped the shreds of eraser off of his pants and on to the already destroyed floor. He was well aware of the mess, but was simply too exhausted to pick any of it up, or even care about it at this point. His brain was scrambled, littered with ideas, some full of potential, and some he would not be able to write even if his life depended on it. He laid his head on the wooden door and just laid it there for a few moments, hoping that the persistent thud would not continue. Much to David’s displeasure, the sound of someone knocking furiously began once again. Scowling, he opened the entrance right as the other person was in the middle of what seemed to be breaking down his door with only their fist.
There stood Robert, a frustrated gleam twinkling in his eyes. He held Jack, whom was shoving all five fingers on one of his hands into his mouth and slobbering and chewing on them. David’s face twisted into disgust when he realized just how gross it truly was seeing a two year old trying to devour his whole hand. "I need a favor," Robert said out of the blue, forcing David to turn his attention back to Robert.
David exhaled mournfully. He hated when anyone asked for any favors or for any help, simply because everyone was so demanding and annoyed these days. Plus, helping someone just made it harder for him to get any work done at all. Don’t people ever realize that I’m busy too? David wonders, beginning to drift off into his own little world once more. Suddenly, inspiration struck in his mind and he rushed back inside his apartment, an angered Robert following closely behind. Robert was used to this happening, random motivation striking at odd times just came with the territory of David’ profession. He watched as his acquaintance scribbled down notes on what seemed to be one of his unpaid bills. He shook his head in aggravation, just wishing that David would hurry up and finish so he would not be late.
"David," Robert beckoned when he noticed that he was finished jotting down who knows what on the scrap of paper. "I need a favor," he repeated, knowing that David had probably not heard it the first time. He glanced back up at the younger man, whom he could tell was getting impatient with him. Robert was still in his fashionable scrubs, his normally well kept dirty blond hair was wild and unruly, his jacket covered with slobber and hanging slightly off his shoulder. He looked like a mess to David, but no worse than he normally was when his shift is over.
"Of course you do," David responded moments after the other man had spoken.
Robert rolled his eyes and continued, "I have to work the night shift, Jen is out for the night, and I have no one to watch Jack." David immediately moaned, and vowed that he was not going to babysit for Robert, no matter how much he begged. He did not even care if the man bothered to get down on his knees and plead for him to do it, there was no way he was going to spend the night listening to a screaming two year old with snot dripping out of his nostrils and saliva pouring out of his mouth stay in this apartment.
"No," David told Robert. Right away, Robert’s mood dropped from bad to worse and David could tell as soon as it happened. He had seen him get mad before, but he would never do anything about it. Unlike him, Robert is way too passive to even say another word about it to him. He would just turn around and leave, just like David wanted him to. He needed to get back to the piece before all hope was lost of him ever completing this project.
"You’re watching him," the Australian commanded as he set Jack’s bags down on to the cluttered hardwood floor. David was in complete and total shock. He was certain that Robert would just back down and exit his apartment, but he actually stuck to his guns. Part of him was a bit impressed, but he was mostly annoyed.
"No, I’m not," he told Robert, crossing his arms and tapping his foot. Hey, he thought, if it worked for mom, then it’ll work for you.
Robert shoved Jack into David’s arms and kissed his son gently on the forehead. Without saying another word, he walked out of David’s apartment before he could even make one last sarcastic comment. David groaned loudly as Jack began to squirm in his arms and started crying. This is going to be a long night, David told himself.
I know none of you may be able to understand what is happening, but that is alright because I am asking you about how I wrote this section of my story. Do you like it? Why or why not? What are some things that I can do to improve this section of my story? The most detailed and thorough answer shall receive ten points!
Thanks! Much appreciated!
The thoughts are supposed to be in italics, but they do not show up on here. Sorry!
By the way, this is an extremely rough draft of a part in the middle of my story. I know it is no where near good, but I want some opinions on the way it is written right now.
i think you did a great job with that part of the story. It kept my attention, i kept wanting to read it . If it was a book id buy it. You used a lot of adjectives and description which gives the reader a vivid picture of whats going on . One thing you could work on is your transitions . Sometimes you’d change over to a different event and that could confuse a reader, but overall great job and keep up the good work.

Everyone on here is always saying "Show, don’t tell" and I was wondering if the section above falls under the category of showing or telling. Is this section of my story showing you what is happening or telling you? Any help is appreciated!
Thanks! Much appreciated!
Please explain your answer and be honest. If I am telling, how can I change my story so that I am showing the reader specific events, not just spelling it all out. The most detailed and thorough answer shall receive ten points!
Joss - Thank you so much! Your advice helped a lot and I am in the process of re-writing it now.
First point of contention I have with this - the use of adverbs. Many words ending in -ly are unnecessary. The first sentence does not need Abruptly, and with that word it also makes it redundant. If he "snapped" out of something then it’s implied that it was abrupt. Another redundancy is, in the second sentence, is "stood up." If you stand then you’re obviously standing up, so there’s no need to say he "stood up" just like there isn’t a reason to say "jumped up," or the "cold snow." Watch out for these kinds of redundancies and try to think through the meaning of the words you write so you can catch them. In the second sentence remove the word "already" it’s unnecessary and the sentence reads well without it. If the floor is destroyed then we know it happened before this scene, if you know what I mean, so you don’t have to say "already destroyed" as if saying the floor was destroyed before you mentioned it. Get it?
Simply? Another -ly that should be removed. "He was exhausted" reads well enough.
Eh, I’m not going to read through all of this. Hopefully, you understand the point I’m making and can go through and edit your work. Remove the pork. Remove the unnecessary words. You’re too wordy with sentences and redundant. Tighten your sentences. Remove the fluff. Ask yourself how you can say it in as few words as possible.
He laid his head on the wooden door and just laid it there for a few moments, hoping that the persistent thud would not continue.
— Redundancy again. You don’t need to say he laid his head on the door twice, and that’s what you’re doing by using the word laid twice. "He laid his head on the wooden door for a few moments, hoping the persistent thud would go away." - simple. Watch the "that the" because sometimes the "that" isn’t needed - grammar.
I’m not going to read far enough to tell you if you’re showing or telling. THink of this as you’re writing. Is there a way you can use description to show the reader instead of saying it outright. Instead of saying "he’s a law student," what words can you use to imply it? Maybe large law books and a backpack? How can you show someone is a ballerina without saying "she’s a ballerina"? Maybe describing the ballerina clothes she’s wearing? A quick scan of some words and it looks like you might be okay with Showing, BUT I can’t continue to read this, sorry.
It’s not good writing, but it’s probably "good" based on your age. Good luck.
[EDIT] I said "Adjectives" but I meant Adverbs.
Men bags/purses. What’s okay and what’s not okay?
08.February, 2010
This is a big fashion risk: THE MEN BAG! Purse, messenger bag, tote, whatever. Now my question is, exactly what can men get away with? In the naughties,…well..in the last decade or two it became "okay" for men to be seen wearing these big heavy messenger bags, computer bags,…luggage bags…but anything as a fashion statement, or out and about was still very IFFY, and only those big clunky bags you can get away with.
However louis vuitton, and many other designers designed bags for men, for quite some time.
They became fashionable to a degree, even though at first …it was still very "G@Y" to do so.
Even now, it’s still g@y, in many areas. But yet, the men bags have still come a far way.
The thing is, I myself am into fashion to a degree, and I’m lucky enough to live in the NYC area, I know that in media centered places things are more tolerated, fashion types of things.
SO as far as the man bag is concerned, what’s okay, and what’s totally a no no.
As far as I’m concerned…men wearing women bags that are OBVIOUSLY for women,….is obviously a no no unless you’re trying to look like a woman yourself.
But I’m assuming that as long as it LOOKS like it’s made for a man,..then it’s okay?
Also, what SIZES are okay? For men, it’s still again, so strict….only the average sized bag, somewhere int he "medium size" section is okay. TOO large is G@Y, too small is G@Y…
im so frustrated with all this bs, that im about to just wear whatever bag I want any size I darn well please!
I’m not trying to look like a woman, but bags DO help and can look pretty cool with the right outfit, u can also throw ur junk in there. cell phone, miscellaneous items, sunblock, i dont know wahtever u have on you. Yes, MEN have these things too. Why do people tink that men just go around looking/acting like a total hobo, while women get all the fun and perks of looking like primadonnas?
The second a man does it, they’re labeled.
I’m rebelling against that, but I still want to know, what’s okay as far as men bags go, and what sizes are okay?
I recently got a small perlina bag for myself, it’s brown leather and expensive, and the seller said well it can be a man bag or a women bag, it looks very unisex, but the one thing that sucks about it, it’s that is SMALL.
It’s like 7 inches across 8 down…its a small bag, like a satchel or something…i dont know, but it has a very long shoulder strap so its like a small messenger bag.
i like bags though. i have alot, and thtye’re either ONLY for men, or at the very best, unisex, but still
i must ask you fashion people, what’s okay and not.
i just still dont want to go out there and look like a total freak.
as much as i want to rebel, i still want to do it tastefully!
ellen can u turn ur emails on? LOL. i need to ask u a question about the bags. haha. ur answer is great.
Haha…I feel you (though I am not a man myself~)
But anyway, it seems you already know what to wear and what not to wear. A bag that is too small looks a bit odd on any sex, and too large humongous bags do too.
I always thought messenger bags looked sexy on men. And of course laptop bags are fine and so are tote bags. Note that these are all under the "medium-sized" category. Usually bags with a more robust, square-like, heavy shape are okay, in gray-toned colors like beige, khaki, olive green, and of course, the standard black and brown.
You can probably have a little more fun with tote bags and backpacks. They can be in brighter colors like purple, yellow, hot pink..yes, hot pink.
If you’re into the pop street style–that’s what I call people who dress in colorful t-shirts, baseball caps, colorful sneakers, and baggy or skinny jeans–then you can get away with color without looking "g@y".
As long as your bag matches what you wear, go for it.
On another note, I think there is nothing wrong with looking gay. If you look gay, that means you look fashionable. There is nothing wrong with looking gay or fashionable. :p
